In ‘activations', hundreds of light switches are activated en masse in a cryptic communicative interplay. By subverting the conventional function of the switch as a compliant object under human control, their quotidian presence posits a future where the strange language of intelligent machines has become normalized. The switches themselves are representative of neural network nodes (aka “activations”), that are tuned throughout the course of the computer's learning process. In this case, they were taught a simple function that allow themselves to be toggled on and off. Their rosy appearance belies their increasing ability to inhabit our physical spaces.
