What if the wall in the West Bank appeared elsewhere -- say, in your backyard?
Using GPS, cartography and our rapidly evolving cartographic imagination to visualize the impact of distant events on local ground, this work aims to re-envision, radically alter and reframe of distant geopolitical events in local terms. It is part of a series called "Shadows from another place.”
"TheWall-TheWorld" is a drone's-eye-view of the wall in the West Bank and, at the same time, in Manhattan, Berlin, San Francisco and Bern. This selected segment of the West Bank wall lies just east of Jerusalem, between Abu Dis in the south and Qalandiya in the north.
Intially an interactive website (2011-2018), viewers explored the West Bank wall as a split screen, along with any city in the world the viewer chose. Changes in Google Earth's platform disabled functionality. This current work features footage from the original, with "acamar," a composition by Frances-Marie Uitti (cellist/composer/performer) and Yota Morimoto (composer).
